Kuwait is largely a cash economy. The local currency is the Kuwaiti Dinar (KD). 1KD is composed of 1000 fils. 1KD is worth approximately 2.2 UK pounds. Banks offer the general services you would expect from a bank, including ATM cards and Internet banking. Bank accounts can be opened by any expat, even if they are on a Visit Visa. However, not all banks give women equal status on the bank account.

CIRRUS- and MAESTRO-linked ATM cards from your home bank will work here, for a fee. While most large shops will take credit cards, many smaller shops will not accept them. Cheques are rarely used.
